Chandpur administrative history
After the defeat of Nawab Siraj Uddaul in the Battle of Plassey in 1757, the political influence of the English was established in Bengal and Bihar. In the battle of Buxar in 1764, Mir Qasim and his allied army were finally defeated to the English. After the Battle of Buxar, Lord Clive Nawab Sirajuddaula and emperor Shah Alam were arrested in Allahabad in 1765 AD. Emperor Shah Alam donated the East India Company to the Diwani of Bengal Bihar on 12 August 1765 in a Farman. During this period Tripura and Comilla states belonged to Suba and were under the rule of Nawab of Murshidabad. After getting the East India Company Diwani, this area is naturally included in the company's revenue regime. In 1772, the company abolished the position of the naib dewan and took the responsibility of revenue collection directly. Nawab of Murshidabad was exempted from the responsibility of governing the government and the company directly took over the rule of Bengal Bihar.
In order to collect the zamindari revenue of Tripura state, an English resident was appointed in Comilla in 1776. The Resident of Comilla was brought under the Chittagong Collector. Chandpur was then under Comilla resident. Mr. Duncan Kamble was appointed the first resident of Comilla, then Mr. Leeak in 1778 and Mr. John Bullar was appointed resident of Comilla in 1785.
The creation of Tripura district: In 1784 and in 1787 AD, two times after the demolition of the Gomti dam, the then Comilla flooded it. Due to flooding there is widespread loss of crops and famine occurs. Local residents are distressed In order to investigate the flood and famine, the company authorities sent a high-ranking officer, Mr. Patterson to Comilla. After the investigation, Mr. Patterson recommended the formation of a district collectorate for the construction of an administrative unit near the people of this area, under the resident of John Bular under Comilla resident Ganganakshaks Baladakhal, Daudkandi and Bhulua Parganas. The Board of Revenue accepted the recommendation. Based on recommendations of Mr. Patterson, Tripura district was formed in 1790 and John Buller was its first collector.
Creating Chandpur Sub-division: Its headquarters in Comilla town is established. In 1821 noakhali collectorate was created with a large area of southern part of Tripura district. Later on the administrative reorganization, Chandpur subdivision was formed on 1 June 1878 in the southern part of the Tripura district. Mr. KC Das Gupta, an Indian Civil Servant, was appointed the first subdivision administrator of Chandpur. There are several changes later in the map of Chandpur. On October 18, 1927, JL Number 120, 123, 124 mouzas from Chandpur Police station were connected to Bhedarganj Police Station in the then Faridpur district. On March 21, 1929, the JL number of Gosairhat Police station was added to the Chandpur thana on 350-357 mouza. On July 5, 1930 and July 1, 1931, JL no-358-364 mouza of Rajbari police station was attached to Chandpur Police Station.
Until the independence of Bangladesh, 49 sub-divisional administrators conducted the rule of Chandpur. Among them, 11 ICSs, a Bengal Civil Service Officer, 21 CSP officers, 6th E, P.C. Mr. Mohammed Ali Miah (EPCS Officer) was the last subdivision administrator of East Liberation. Mr. Ahmed Ayub Kadri was the first subdivision administrator and Mr. Md. Akter Hossain Khan was the last subdivision administrator of Chandpur.
Chandpur District Constituted: In 1984, the government extended Chandpur subdivision to district under the administrative decentralization and district reconstruction policy, and Chandpur was started as a district of 1 February in 1984. Mr. Alhaj Janibul Haque was appointed the first deputy commissioner of Chandpur district. After the formation of the district, 16 Deputy Commissioners of the district have been appointed as deputy commissioners in Chandpur district.
Collectorate Building: After the formation of the district, the activities of Chandpur collectorate are increased and the need to construct new collectibles After the inauguration of the new collective building on 28 November 1999 at the place of Sholghar in Chandpur city, the activities of Chandpur district administration were being managed from the collectibles. Before the transfer of the activities of the district administration to the present collectorate building, Chandpur district and earlier sub-divisional activities were managed from the building of Chandpur's 250-bed General Hospital. Chandpur's Deputy Commissioner's Residential Office is still located beside the building.
